Last week a tragedy happened too close to home. St. Croix County Deputy Katie Leising responded to a call of a car in the ditch. She was doing her job of responding to a person in need. This is something every officer does every day without hesitation. But unlike the majority of these calls, she did not return home. She was shot and died serving her community. Her wife and son will not hear her voice again. Her wife and son will now eat dinner without her, go to bed without her, and learn to live without her. She was the fourth officer killed in the line of duty in Wisconsin just this year. And it’s only the beginning May.

All the police officers that I have had the privilege of working with in my 17 years with our department are decent individuals who put their lives on the line to keep us safe and deserve our prayers for the risk they place on themselves. Thank God for these courageous police officers by saying a prayer for them. Because of their efforts, you and I may have a more peaceful existence in the world.

Our officers need support and encouragement, especially now.  Words of kindness, or even a smile and a waive, can go a long way. Please don’t assume they know you support them.  Tell them.

Our police officers do not just need protection; they need God’s wisdom and guidance to use their judgment correctly. Pray that they will always consider how their actions can affect others.

Next week is National Police Week. Would you please say a prayer, offer up a silent word of protection, give off positive vibes, whatever you believe in, just do something for the men and women who wear the badge and their families. We are all human, we all bleed, we all feel, and we all deserve respect. Here’s one of the prayers I’ve shared this week on Facebook and Instagram this past week if you want some guidance in how to pray.

O Lord our God,

Please bring justice to those who deserve it, I beg you. I am grateful and my heart is filled with joy because of their efforts. They are shielding the vulnerable from the wrath of those who would harm them. Please allow the victims of crimes to express their thanks to the police officers that came to their aid.

I also pray for the families and friends of law enforcement officers, O God. There are instances when they are anxiously awaiting the return of their loved ones from a perilous assignment.

While they’re waiting at home, remove fear from their hearts and bless them with rest and relaxation as their beloved performs their duties in the name of public service. Reunite them safely with their families. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in heaven.

Amen.

I hope you will help to spread love and grace to those around you in the coming days.
