Combating the Loneliness Epidemic

Let’s Connect and Make a Difference!

Did you hear about this? The US Surgeon General has declared a new epidemic, the epidemic of loneliness. Shocking, right? According to a study, 50% of Americans struggle with loneliness at some point in their lives. Even more alarming, about 10% of these individuals won’t even talk about it. It’s heartbreaking to think that somebody in your circle could be feeling alone and disconnected. This weekend, I virtually attended a virtual conference and one of the presenters shared about this study.

This revelation served as a wake-up call for me. It’s time to be more intentional about reaching out and responding when someone reaches out to me. But it’s not just about responding; it’s about connecting on a deeper level. So, let’s make a difference together.

Here’s my proposal: Let’s schedule a girls’ night! With those statistics in mind, someone in your circle might be feeling lonely and your invitation may help them realize they have someone to count on. Wondering how to help? Here are some other tips:

Three Tips for Combatting Loneliness:

1. Reach out regularly: Make it a habit to reach out to friends and family regularly, even if it’s just a quick text or phone call.  Invite them to meet for a cup of coffee or other beverage. Let them know you’re thinking of them.

2.  Join groups or classes: Invite your friends to join a group or class with you. Whether it’s a book club, fitness class, or cooking workshop, they’ll have the opportunity to meet new people and combat loneliness.

3. Volunteer together: Volunteering is not only a great way to give back to the community but also an excellent way to make meaningful connections. Choose a cause you’re passionate about and get involved with your friends. You’ll not only make a difference in the lives of others but also in your own.

Now, back to our girls’ night idea! We can gather a handful of friends, and each one of us will invite someone new to join our group. Whether you host an event or we plan something together, count me in! I’ll bring makeup or nail polish, and together, we’ll have fun, connect, and make a difference in combating loneliness.

Who’s in?

Let’s connect and share grace with one another!
