Fireside Chat

A few years ago, my husband came home from work with a question that caught me off guard. “Would you like a propane fire pit for Mother’s Day?” he asked with a hopeful look in his eye. My initial reaction was practical and cautious. Knowing our financial situation, I thanked him for the thought but said we couldn’t afford it. Besides, would we even use it? Our traditional fire pit in the yard was used so little, so I doubted a new one would fare any better.

My husband, however, persisted. He kept asking, and I kept thinking practically, repeating that we wouldn’t use it often enough to justify the cost. Yet, he saw something I didn’t. He understood my love for quiet moments and enjoying outside time better than I did. Ignoring my reservations, he bought the fire pit, assembled it, and placed it in our backyard.

To my surprise, we began using it all the time. Whether we were sitting around chatting as a family, enjoying some solitude in the evening, or toasting marshmallows, the fire pit became a cherished part of our summer enjoyment.  I often grab a glass of wine and enjoy a few minutes after work to decompress.  It brought a sense of peace and connection that we hadn’t realized we were missing.

This experience made me reflect on how often we talk ourselves out of things we want. We let practicality and fear of disappointment hold us back. But sometimes, taking a chance on something uncertain can lead to unexpected joy and fulfillment. I’m incredibly thankful for my husband’s encouragement and wisdom. Without it, I would have missed out on the tranquility and joy our fire pit has brought into our lives.
