Hiking Essentials for Short Desert Hikes

During my recent visits to see my mom in Mesa, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring several hiking trails in the area. My mom, who is approaching 89 next month, continues to inspire me with her love for outdoor adventures. It was her passion for hiking in the desert that sparked my own interest in exploring the trails.

If you’re planning to venture out on short desert hikes ranging from 2 to 6 miles, here are some hiking essentials inspired by my adventures with my mom:

  1. Hiking Boots: While some trails can be tackled in tennis shoes, I recommend investing in a sturdy pair of hiking boots for added grip and ankle support, especially on steep or rocky terrain. I’m a fan of Merrill’s MOAB boots. I bring a pair of post-hike sandals along.
  2. Walking Stick: Consider bringing a hiking stick for stability, particularly when navigating downward slopes with loose rocks. It can provide extra support and confidence on the trail. I got to use one of my dad’s walking sticks on my hikes during this trip and I liked having both he and mom with me.
  3. Sun Protection: Don’t underestimate the desert sun! Apply a sweat-resistant sunscreen, wear a hat, and don sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes from harmful UV rays. Opt for long sleeves or a sun shirt if you prefer to avoid sunscreen.
  4. Water: Stay hydrated by bringing plenty of water for your hike. I recommend carrying an extra bottle and keeping it in your vehicle for replenishment after your trek.
  5. Trail Map: Whether it’s a physical map from the welcome station or a trail app like AllTrails, having a map handy can help you navigate the trail and stay on course. This is especially useful for those of us who struggle with map reading skills.
  6. Snacks: Even on shorter hikes, it’s essential to refuel your body. Pack snacks like trail mix for a combination of energy-boosting nuts and sweet dried fruits to keep you going.
  7. Miscellaneous Items: Don’t forget to pack essentials like tissues, a small cloth, bandages, and lip balm for minor incidents on the trail and to keep your lips moisturized.

As for carrying all these essentials, I personally prefer using a waist pack that holds two water bottles. While many hikers, mom included, opt for hydration packs like Camelbak, I’ve found my trusty waist pack to be sufficient for short desert hikes. It’s been with me for many miles, including during my participation in the Komen 3-Day event around 15 years ago.

With these hiking essentials in tow, you’re ready to hit the trails and explore the beauty of the desert landscape. Remember to respect nature, stay hydrated, and enjoy the adventure!

Do you enjoy hiking? If so, what do you carry in your pack when you hike?
